BERKELEY - CAL TO HOST ADIDAS CAL LEGACY CLASSIC: Coming off two road victories, No. 9 California (2-0) will host the adidas Cal Legacy Classic Friday, Sept. 9, and Sunday, Sept. 11, at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears face Vanderbilt (2-0) Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Cal State Northridge (2-0) Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The other games feature Stanford vs. Cal State Northridge at noon on Friday and Stanford vs. Vanderbilt at noon on Sunday.
NINTH ANNUAL ADIDAS CAL LEGACY CLASSIC: This marks the ninth year that Cal has hosted the adidas Cal Legacy Classic. Cal won the tournament last year at Edwards Stadium, defeating San Diego, 1-0, and San Jose State, 2-0.
LOOKING AT THE POLLS: Cal is ranked as high as No. 9 in the Soccer America poll, while the NSCAA poll has the Bears tabbed at No. 10.
CAL OPENS THE SEASON 2-0 AT THE UCSB ADIDAS CLASSIC: The Bears opened the regular season strong last weekend, upsetting No. 4 UC Santa Barbara, 2-0, Sept. 2, at Harder Stadium. Junior midfielder Eric Ebert scored the eventual game-winning goal for Cal in the 23rd minute with an assist from forward Javier Hil. Sophomore midfielder Luke Sassano scored Cal's insurance goal late in the second half off a cross from senior forward Calen Carr. Sunday afternoon, the Bears defeated UC Riverside, 2-0. Ebert and senior midfielder Pieter Berger assisted Carr in what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 26th minute. Senior defender Tyson Wahl scored off a penalty kick in the 44th minute to seal the win for Cal.
SENIOR GOALKEEPER STRONG FOR BEARS: Senior goalkeeper Eric Kronberg was strong on defense for the Bears last weekend, recording six saves. Kronberg earned two more shutouts to move his total career shutouts to eight.
CARR COMES UP BIG: Carr once again came up big for the Bears at the UCSB tournament scoring the game-winning goal against UC Riverside. Carr also assisted on Cal's insurance goal against No. 4 UCSB. Carr led the team with nine shots for the tournament. Carr now leads active players in career goals (10) and career shots (118).
EBERT EXCELLS: Ebert had a successful weekend at the UCSB adidas Classic. Ebert scored the game-winning goal against No. 4 UCSB and assisted on the game-winning goal against UC Riverside. Ebert's goal against UCSB marks the fourth game-winning goal of his career. He tallied three game-winners during the 2004 season.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
VANDERBILT: Vanderbilt returns nine starters and 18 lettermen from its 7-10-1 2004 team. The Commodores are ranked No. 4 in the NSCAA Midwest Region poll that was released today. Vanderbilt's 2-0 overall record marks the first time the team has started out with two wins since the 1993 campaign.
CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE: Cal State Northridge returns seven starters and 13 lettermen from its 11-6-2 2004 team. The Matadors won the second-annual Matador Soccer Invitational Sept. 5, with a 3-0 victory over Dartmouth at Matador Soccer Field. Juniors Ronny Shields and Willie Sims and freshman Michael Gordon scored for Cal State Northridge, while freshman Kevin Guppy posted the solo shutout against the Big Green.
