Freshman Ryan Sorahan Elects to Transfer
Aug. 20, 1999
TURLOCK - Incoming freshman quarterback Ryan Sorahan has decided to transfer to another school, Cal head coach Tom Holmoe announced Friday.
Sorahan participated in the first eight days of fall camp in Turlock before making his decision. He was running with the third team during practices this week, behind sophomore Sam Clemons and freshman Kyle Boller, and felt his playing opportunities would be limited at Cal.
"Ryan and his family met with me this afternoon," said Holmoe. "They decided it was in Ryan's best interests to look at another school. With Sam and Kyle ahead of him, he wanted a chance to play earlier in his career. He's a good kid and his family is great. It all came down to playing time, and they didn't see that chance with Sam and Kyle playing so well. We wish him success in the future."
Backing up Clemons and Boller at quarterback is senior Wesley Dalton. The Bears will add walk-on QB Kevin Kline from Bishop O'Dowd HS next week when classes start.
Sorahan, from Los Gatos High School, said he did not know what his immediate plans would be. "I like the coaches at Cal," Sorahan said. "I just didn't feel I'd get a chance to play right away. Kyle and I are both real good quarterbacks. It's a shame we're on the same team because you can only have one starter."
