BERKELEY - For the second time in the last three days, Cal conducted a pair of practices as the Golden Bears' 2012 training camp reached its 10th day. After the workout much of head coach Jeff Tedford's comments focused on the team's depth and the play of some of his young players at several positions.

Much of the talk was about the defensive side of the ball as Tedford pointed out the play of defensive backs Tyré Ellison, Kameron Jackson, Adrian Lee and Joel Willis. "I think we have some depth at those positions," Tedford said. "The two-deep at each of the corners with Kam [Jackson] and Adrian Lee behind Mark [Anthony] and Steve [Williams], we feel good about that."

He said that five players are currently rotating at nickel back and that the Bears were still in the evaluation process as to what their best combination would be at that spot.

Tedford also addressed the play of Brennan Scarlett at outside linebacker, saying "he's having a really good camp" and added some comments about a pair of rookies at inside linebacker in Michael Barton and Hardy Nickerson.

"They're doing a good job," Tedford said of Barton and Nickerson. "They're doing some good things. They've flashed. They run to the ball really well. They're good, tough smart guys and good tacklers. They're quality linebackers."

On the offensive side of the ball, Tedford pointed out the team's depth at tailback especially among the top four of C.J. Anderson, Brendan Bigelow, Daniel Lasco and Isi Sofele.

"It's a toss-up ... we've got four tailbacks that are really top-notch tailbacks," he said.

He also talked about the team's freshmen wide receivers.

"I think Harper and Treggs have made an impact," Tedford said. "We're still evaluating the others but I think those two probably have a step up right now. It would be fair to say that they're probably going to be in the rotation. They're very talented. They run really well, they catch the ball really well. They have to continue to learn what we're doing with the speed of the game, but I think each day that they practice they're more and more comfortable with the speed of the game, and they understand what we're trying to get done."

The offensive conversation also included rookie tight ends Maximo Espitia and Harrison Wilfley.

"Maximo is a really good athlete who fits in that position really well," Tedford said. "He's very smart. I'm really pleased with the way he has absorbed the offense. That's been great and the same with Harrison. He's absorbed it really well mentally. He's a very tough kid, he's taken a lot of reps. He's a guy that's going to be in the rotation this year."

Throughout the workout the Memorial Stadium public address system was being tested and the sound was easily heard on adjacent Witter Rugby Field.

"I can't wait to get in there," Tedford said with a smile.

Cal will open the 2012 season against Nevada at a renovated Memorial Stadium on Sat., Sept. 1 (Noon PT). The contest will be televised live by Pac-12 Networks, and the radio broadcast will be available on the Cal IMG Sports Radio Network with KGO 810 in San Francisco serving as the flagship station.
