DAVIS, CALIF. - The No. 20-ranked Cal baseball team lost another one-run game in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday (April 28), dropping a 6-5 decision to UC Davis at Dobbins Stadium. The Aggies Kyle Mihaylo had the game-winning RBI single to center field off Golden Bear reliever Brian Diemer as Cal lost its third one-run game in the last four contests. Sophomore catcher Chadd Krist led the Bears at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, including a solo home run in the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Diemer (1-2, 3.0 innings, five hits, one run, one walk, three strikeouts) got a fly out to start the inning, but yielded a soft single to center field to Scott Heylman. Heylman then advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and after David Popkins was intentionally walked, Mihaylo won the game for the Aggies with a hit over center fielder Darrel Matthews' head, scoring Heylman.

Cal had started the day with a run in the top of the first inning on Krist's safety squeeze bunt that scored lead-off hitter Danny Oh. The Bears added two more runs in the second inning on an RBI single by freshman third baseman Mitch Delfino, and Delfino later scored on a double steal, one of Cal's seven stolen bases on the day. UC Davis came back with a run in the bottom of the second inning on a wild pitch by Cal starter Dixon Anderson to make the score, 3-1.

The Bears upped their lead to 4-1 on sophomore outfielder Chad Bunting's RBI single to center field in the third inning, but the Aggies answered with Scott Lyman's RBI double in the bottom of the third inning.

Cal was able to extend its lead to 5-2 when Krist hit his one-out homer down the left field line in the fifth inning (team-leading eighth home run of the year). Yet, UC Davis later tied the game, 5-5, with three runs in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Eric Johnson and a two-run single by Justin Schafer.

The Bears then ran into some tough luck in the top of the seventh inning when Krist lined out to left field with Oh on second base, doubling up Oh on the play and ending the inning.

Cal will next try to snap its four-game losing streak when it hosts Oregon State in a three-game Pac-10 series, beginning Friday, April 30 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond.

Home Runs:

Cal: Krist, solo home run in the fifth inning.

UC Davis: None.
