BERKELEY - Sophomore Graham Nesbit tallied a team-high three goals and eight other Golden Bears scored as Cal men's water polo defeated No. 18 Santa Clara, 15-8, Saturday (Nov. 10) in a non-conference match at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Kirk Everist's squad improved to 13-7 overall, while the Broncos dropped to 9-17. Junior goalie Michael Boggan added 11 saves in three quarters of play for the Bears.
Cal took control of the match early, outscoring Santa Clara, 7-0, in the first quarter. The Bears have won three matches in a row entering Sunday's 12 p.m. MPSF match versus No. 4-ranked UC Santa Barbara. Sunday's match is also Senior Day as Cal will be honoring veterans Marin Balarin and Mason Cox in the season's final home contest at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Besides Nesbit's three goals, four other Bears had two goals apiece - Balarin, sophomore Aleksa Saponjic and true freshmen Max Schell and Mitchell Hamilton. Other scorers for Cal included the team's leading scorer, junior Collin Smith (54 goals in 20 matches), sophomore Chris Daniel, redshirt freshman Colin Mulcahy and freshman Andrew Schnugg.
Following the match versus No. 4-ranked UC Santa Barbara Sunday, the Bears will travel to Pacific Nov. 18 before entering the MPSF Tournament, Nov. 23-25 at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium.
