BERKELEY - The University of California women's gymnastics team signed two athletes to national letters of intent, coach Trina Tinti announced Wednesday. Monique Chang an all-arounder, and Anja Garcia, a vault and beam specialist will join the Golden Bears in 2003.

Chang, from Fairfax, Va. (Capital Gymnastics), is an accomplished gymnast who is a four-time national team member. She also has an outstanding repertoire of skill on every event. At the age of 15, Chang was selected to participate on the USA Gymnastics Olympic Training Squad in 1999.

"Monique's going to be a huge addition in boosting national rankings in the years ahead," said Tinti. "She comes to Cal with a wealth of international experience."

Joining Chang in the 2002 class is Garcia, who hails from Fair Oaks, Calif. (Lescisin). She is a two-time state beam champion and an elite vaulter. Garcia participated in the 2001 USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Nationals among other national competitions.

"Anja is a top national competitor and has been to the Junior Olympic National Championships four years in a row," said Tinti. "I think the vault and beam are the events where she will help us the most."
