Cal Loses Tie Breaker to ASU at Hooters Collegiate Match Play

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - No. 7-seeded California closed out its fall season with a loss to No. 15-seeded Arizona State in the second round of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship Monday at Barefoot Resort.

The Golden Bears and Sun Devils began their match yesterday and concluded it today tied 2.5-2.5. Arizona State advanced to face No. 14-seeded Stanford by claiming one more hole (7 to 6) than Cal.

Cal earned points at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots from seniors Sarah Huarte and Claire Dury, respectively. Huarte, a preseason second team All-American, defeated Alissa Kuczka 5 and 4, and was the only Cal golfer to win both of her matches. Dury ousted Josefin Gustafsson, 1 up.

At the No. 3 slot, Cal freshman Danielle Nash tied Sara Jones. Charmaine Erasmus held off Cal senior Anna Temple at No. 4, 4 and 2, and Tiffany Tavee defeated Cal sophomore Sophia Sheridan 3 and 2.

Florida, North Carolina and Pepperdine were also eliminated from the 16-team tournament which concludes tomorrow.

The Bears return to action Feb. 9-11, 2004, at the Northrop Grumman Challenge in Los Angeles.
