No. 3 Cal Women's Water Polo Edges No. 6 San Diego State and No. 15 Pacific at MPSF Tourney

Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, Los Angeles, CA - The No. 3 California women's water polo team defeated No. 6 San Diego State, 9-8, and No. 15 Pacific, 8-2, in first round action of the MPSF Tournament, Friday.

In the morning match, the San Diego State Aztecs led the Bears, 4-3 at the half, but the score was locked at 7 in the fourth quarter. Cal sophomore Beth Irwin notched the game-winning goal in the second overtime and tallied three goals in the match. Junior Heather Petri also helped the Bears with three goals.

In the afternoon match, the Bears held the Pacific Tigers to one goal in both the first and second half of play. Five Cal players tallied points for the Bears with Irwin notching half of Cal's eight points.

The Bears next face No. 8 UC Santa Barbara at 10:45 a.m. and No. 2 Stanford at 5:15 p.m., Saturday.
