Game Notes

- The Michigan State attendance of 62,956 marks the 25th straight home game with over 50,000 fans - every home game over the last five years ... this game was also the 14th game of 60,000+ fans under head coach Jeff Tedford

- The Golden Bears donned their new look uniforms (designed by Nike) today vs. Michigan State ... what the new jersey doesn't have is the last names of the players ... since World War II, Cal has sported at least 15 different helmet versions and countless variations on its uniforms ... additionally Cal sported its gold alternate jersey look for today's game and improved to a perfect 6-0 in the gold-based outfits (Cal unveiled the gold alternate uniforms in 2006)

- Cal continued its impressive record at Memorial Stadium after today's 38-31 victory over Michigan State ... the Golden Bears have now won 23 of its last 27 games

- Cal is now 70-39-4 in all-time season openers, while Jeff Tedford improved his opening day record to 5-2

- The Bears evened their all-time series against Michigan State at 2-2 ... Tedford improved to 5-0 against the Big 10 conference

- Cal has not been shut out in a school-record 108 straight games dating back to Sept. 11, 1999

- Defensively, linebacker Eddie Young and cornerback Darian Hagan made their first career starts for the Bears

- Offensively Shane Vereen, Mitchell Schwartz, Sean Young and Chris Guarnero made their first career starts

- Kevin Riley made his second career start and completed seven of his nine passes in the first half for 91 yards ... threw his first touchdown of the game - a four yarder to Cameron Morrah (his third career TD reception) ... finished the game completing 17-of-24 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns

- Bryan Anger booted his first career punt in the first quarter 56 yards, pinning the Spartans on their 14 yard line ... his second punt (also in the first quarter) was 59 yards, pinning MSU at its 17 yard line ... booted another 56 yarder in the third quarter, pinning Michigan State at the 3 yard line ...

- Brett Johnson blocked a Michigan State punt in the first quarter resulting in Bryant Nnabuife recovery and score for a touchdown ... it was Cal's first blocked punt since Nu'u Tafisi at Washington State on Oct. 14, 2006

- Jahvid Best had a career-high 24 carries ... recorded a career-long 42-yard reception towards the end of the second quarter ... added his third career rushing touchdown with a two-yard scamper in the second quarter ... racked up 118 all-purpose yards in the first half (63 yards rushing and 58 yards receiving) ... finished the contest with 111 yards on 24 carries with a touchdown

- Shane Vereen had a career-long 81-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to ice the game for the Bears ... had 101 yards rushing on nine carries in today's game ... the longest rush for the Bears last season was a 73-yard touchdown run by DeSean Jackson at Colorado State ... Vereen hauled in his first career reception (a 13 yarder) in the third quarter

- Today's contest marked the first time Cal had two running backs go over 100 rushing yards since Justin Forsett (124) and Marshawn Lynch (111) both cracked the century mark vs. Texas A&M in the 2006 Holiday Bowl on Dec. 28, 2006

- Nate Longshore made his first appearance against the Spartans in the second quarter and he promptly completed his first pass to Cameron Morrah for 50 yards (Morrah's career long reception) - his longest pass completion since 2006 ... Longshore completed his first three passes before his next two passes were intercepted

- Sean Young recorded a career long 42-yard reception from Kevin Riley in the third quarter (helped set up Cal's second offensive TD of the game)

- Syd'Quan Thompson recorded his third career interception at the end of the second quarter to thwart a Spartan scoring drive... had three pass break-ups and five tackles in today's game

- David Seawright attempted and connected on his first career field goal of 26 yards in the second quarter

- Kevin Bemoll - who made the transition from OL to DL in the off-season, saw his first action as a Golden Bear in the third quarter

- Will Ta'ufo'ou caught his first career touchdown pass with 5:45 left in the ball game
