The California Golden Bears women's gymnastics team competed in the first of two meets in the state of Michigan this week, falling to Western Michigan, 191.300-189.650 in a dual meet Friday night in Kalamazoo.
The Cal gymnasts had individual successes, with Bears earning the top scores in half the events. Sophomore Avery Gee earned a 9.775 for her floor performance, tying for the high mark in the event. Junior Sophia Hocini had the top score on the beam, earning a 9.700. Hocini also earned a 9.700 on the bars, placing her second in that event. Hocini's top score of the meet was a 9.725 on the vault, the second highest score in the event. Hocini scored a 38.825 in the all-around, tying her for the top score. Hocini also had the top all-around score in last weekend's meet against Arizona, giving her back-to-back all-around victories. Avery Gee was fourth with a 38.100.
The Bears edged Western Michigan on the bars, posting a season-high mark of 47.550 for the event. Western Michigan topped the Bears in the other four events.
The Bears will be back in action on Sunday, March 8 at 11 a.m. in Lansing, Michigan when they take on Michigan State and Ball State. Live stats will be available for that meet.
