STANFORD, CALIF. - Juniors Tom Shields and Trevor Hoyt, and freshman Tyler Messerschmidt produced wins in individual events - and the Golden Bears' 400 medley relay team of senior Mathias Gydesen, senior Nolan Koon, Shields and Messerschmidt won the opening event - but No. 6 Cal fell to No. 3 Stanford, 146.5-96.5, Saturday (Feb. 18) during the Big Meet at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center.
The Cardinal improved to 8-1 in dual meets, while the Bears went to 4-2. To two teams will next compete at the Pac-12 Swimming Championships, Feb. 29-March 3 in Long Beach, Calif.
Cal also had several runner-up finishes versus Stanford. A highlight for the Bears was a 1-2 finish in the 200 breast with senior Martin Liivamagi placing second to Hoyt with a time of 1:59.46. Other second place finishes for Cal included Liivamagi in the 200 IM (1:47.19), sophomore Jeremy Bagshaw in the 1000 free (9:08.42) and 500 free (4:26.47), freshman Will Hamilton in the 200 fly (1:47.29) and Gydesen in the 200 back (1:45.17).
At last year's Pac-10 meet, Shields was the conference champion in the 100 back (45.65) and the 200 fly (1:40.31), and was a member of the league winning 200 free (anchor leg), 400 free (third leg) and 400 medley relays (butterfly leg). Koon was the Pac-10 champion in the 200 breast (1:54.42), while Gydesen swam the backstroke leg of the conference champion 400 medley relay.
