Cal Men's Golf Finishes Tied for 14th at PING-Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, ARIZ. - The Cal men's golf team started the 2006 spring season off tying for 14th place Tuesday at the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate, played at the Arizona National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz., Jan. 30-31. The Golden Bears shot rounds of 304, 293 and 307 to conclude the tournament at 904 (+52), tying with Pac-10 opponent Oregon State. Brigham Young captured the tournament with a score of 843 (283, 265, 286, -18), followed by Arizona State and Arizona tying for second with 843's. Cal had finished 14th at last year's PING-Arizona Intercollegiate as well.

Cal's top individual finisher was freshman George Gandranata, who finished tied for 40th with a six-over 219 (72, 72, 75). Other finishers for the Bears included sophomore Freddy Wolfe, who tied for 50th at 221 (72, 73, 76, +8), freshman Romain Payet tied for 56th with a 224 (78, 73, 73, +11), sophomore Michael Jensen was 85th at 242 (82, 77, 83, +29) and junior Michael Wilson was 86th with a 245 (84, 75, 86, +32).

Arizona State's Alejandro Canizares (67, 66, 71 - 204, -9), last year's tournaments' individual champion, lost in a playoff to Arizona's Henry Liaw (67, 68, 69), after playing the 18th hole six times.

The Bears next competition will be at the John Burns Intercollegiate, Feb. 22-24 in Honolulu, Hawaii
