Dec. 16, 2008

BERKELEY - California punter Bryan Anger earned his second Freshman All-America notice, this time by Sporting News, on Tuesday. Anger was also selected as a Freshman All-American by College Football News.

In his first year as Cal's punter, Anger quickly established himself as one of the best as his position in the country. The redshirt freshman from Camarillo was named second-team All-Pac-10 and was the only freshman and Pac-10 player to be named a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award.

Anger was named the Pac-10 Special Teams Player of the Week Oct. 6 when he averaged 47.4 yards on seven punts and placed three kicks inside the 20-yard-line vs. Arizona State. He set a school single-game record when he averaged 60.2 ypp on four punts vs. Stanford, including two of the five longest punts in school history - a 76-yarder on his first boot (No. 4) and a 75-yarder on his second (No. 5). He is the owner of the three longest punts in the Pac-10 this year, while 25 of his 66 punts have landed inside the opponent 20 and has 15 50-yard punts on the year. His 43.7 ypp ranks fourth on the Cal season list and named Cal's most valuable freshman.

Cal will be in action in the Emerald Bowl vs. Miami on Dec. 27 at 5 p.m. at AT&T Park in San Francisco. The Bears completed the regular season with an 8-4 overall record and a 6-3 mark in the Pac-10.
