Paige Bowie Earns Softball All-Academic Honor
May 13, 1999
BERKELEY - Sophomore outfielder Paige Bowie has been named first team GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII for softball. Bowie, who leads Cal with a .324 batting average, owns a 3.70 GPA as a business administration major.
Bowie is the first Cal softball player to earn the honor since Anne Walsh in 1996, and her name will now be placed on the national Academic All-America ballot. District VIII represents Division I schools in California, Hawaii, Alaska, British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Utah.
A second team Pac-10 All-Academic selection last year, Bowie was also an honorable mention All-Pac-10 pick as a freshman.
In addition to softball, Bowie has also earned a number of honors as a member of the Cal basketball team. This past season, she was voted first team Pac-10 All-Academic and third team GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District, as well as honorable mention All-Pac-10. Named team MVP in 1998, Bowie has led the Bears in scoring the last two seasons, including 11.9 ppg this past year.
The Cal softball team is ranked 17th in the country with a 42-19 overall record. The Bears close out the regular season Saturday against Stanford at 1 p.m. on Levine-Fricke Field. Cal is expected to receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament, and the selections will be announced Sunday afternoon.
