The California men's gymnastics team (0-1) fell to cross- bay rival Stanford (1-0) in its season opener, 212.750 - 211.100, Saturday evening at Burnham Pavilion. The Golden Bears, ranked fifth in the preseason poll, won two of the six events, including floor (35.900) and parallel bar (35.400).
"It was generally good for the first meet of the season," said head coach Barry Weiner. "We still have a lot to do. Overall the meet was a lot of growing pains."
Five-time All-American Cody Moore finished second in the all-around (52.950) behind Stanford's Daniel Gill (54.050). Moore, the 2002 parallel bar National Champion, capped off a 9.400 on the parallel bars, taking first place in the event. Also finishing in the Top 5 was two-time All-American David Eaton (50.900) behind the Cardinal's Matthew McLean (52.550).
Sophomore Graham Ackerman set a personal best 9.000 on the parallel bars while tying for first place on floor (9.300) with Stanford's Gill.
