CORVALLIS, OR - Sophomore third baseman Xavier Nady hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to lead the University of California baseball team to a 7-6 victory over Oregon State Sunday in Corvallis. Cal improves to 18-26 overall and 6-9 in the Pac-10, while Oregon State falls to 13-28, 2-10 in conference. The Bears ended up winning two-of-three games in the series, defeating the Beavers, 13-3, Friday, losing 11-5 Saturday and winning the rubber match, 7-6, Sunday.
Cal was trailing 6-5 with Preston Sharp on first base and one out in the eighth when Nady hit his shot to left-center field off of Oregon State reliever Mike Boire (2-3, 3.3 innings, four hits, two runs, two walks, four strikeouts). Nady, who hit his Pac-10 leading 21st homer of the season, had fouled off several of Boire's pitches before hitting his game-winning homer. Nady's exploits topped off an outstanding three-game series as he hit a home run in each of the games and finished 6-for-15 with seven RBI.
The winning pitcher for the Bears was freshman reliever Trevor Hutchinson (3-4, 2.7 innings, two hits, one run, two walks, two strikeouts), who came into the game in sixth inning and allowed a Joe Gerber solo home run to give OSU a 6-5 lead. But, Nady was able to give Cal the lead in the eighth and then the Bears received some solid relief pitching from juniors Jon Cuccias and David Cash. Cuccias was able to get the final out with runners on first and second base in the bottom of the eighth, and then Cash earned his second save of the season, and the series, pitching a perfect bottom of the ninth with two strikeouts.
Other key players for the Bears included sophomore catcher Mike Tonis, who broke a school record with four doubles in a single game, hitting two baggers in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings. Sophomore designated hitter David Sark continued his hot hitting as he had a three-run homer in the first inning and had an RBI single in the third inning. Sark hit a home run in each game of the series and finished the weekend 4-for-11 with eight RBI. As a team, Cal hit 10 home runs versus the Beavers.
Cal will next travel to Pacific, Tuesday, Apr. 20 at 2:30 p.m., then visit San Francisco Wednesday, Apr. 21 at 2:30 p.m., before hosting Bay Area rival Stanford in a three-game conference series beginning Friday Apr. 23 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
