RICHARDSON, Texas - The 11th-ranked California men's soccer team defeated Florida International, 3-0, on Friday afternoon at the SMU Radisson Invitational at the UT-Dallas Stadium Field. The Golden Bears' record improves to 1-1-1 (0-0-0 Pac-10), while FIU falls to 0-2-0 (0-0-0 Conference USA).
"It was a great result for the team," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "The players certainly worked hard, and their efforts were rewarded tonight."
Cal sophomore forward Jacob Wilson, assisted by freshman midfielder Imaan Kerchgani, scored the first goal on a breakaway in the 39th minute. Senior defender Steve Purdy headed in freshman midfielder Hector Jimenez's free kick to give Cal a 2-0 lead in the 75th minute. Sophomore midfielder Pat Marion set up the final goal, by senior forward Matt Holtrust, after a goalmouth scramble in the 85th minute.
Goalkeeper Justin Myers played 90 minutes in Cal's net, making two saves, and earned his first career shutout.
Cal will play host and second-ranked SMU in the last game of the tournament at 7:30 p.m. CT tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 2.
