July 4, 2008

OMAHA, Neb. - One day after qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team in the 100-meter freestyle, California swimmer Nathan Adrian qualified for the 50-free final with the seventh-fastest time (22.03) in the semifinals on the Fourth of July on Friday in the U.S. trials at the Qwest Center. The men's 50-free final is scheduled for Saturday.

Also on Friday, Golden Bears alumna Natalie Coughlin qualified for her third Olympic event when she placed second in the 100-meter freestyle in a time of 53.83 on Friday. Former Bear Jessica Hardy posted a 54.62 to place fourth and also qualify for the 100 free at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China. Emily Silver, who completed her Cal career this past season, finished fifth in the 100 free in 54.91 and must wait until later in the week to see if she has earned an Olympic berth. In order to fill out its 4x100-free relay at the Olympics, the U.S. team automatically takes the top four swimmers in the 100 free and could take the fifth- and sixth-place finishers as well.

Coughlin is also qualified to swim in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley later this summer in Beijing.

On Friday morning, Cal swimmer Lauren Rogers finished 19th with a time of 2:14.12 in the women's 200 backstroke heats and did not advance to the semifinal round.

NBC will televise Friday's semifinals and finals from the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials at 8 p.m. (PT). Please check your local listings for channel lineup. Additionally, fans can follow all the action via the web at NBCOlympics.com and USASwimming.org.
