BERKELEY - With the California softball team in its 40th year of existence, the Golden Bear program is steeped in rich history. The squad still employs certain cheers and traditions that go back years while other customs and rituals are more recent additions. CalBears.com queried the current student-athletes and coaches to find out what their favorite Cal traditions are. One crowd favorite was Ninja, a game the Bears play in which each participant has one chance to knock a teammate out of the game.
Valerie Arioto -
My favorite Cal softball team tradition is our "Bear Pride" tradition. It brings us all together before the game starts!
Ashley Decker -
My favorite Cal team tradition is practicing and weight training in our costumes on Halloween.
Frani Echavarria -
My favorite tradition would have to be either dressing up every Halloween for weights and then practicing in them after, or hearing Val sing her hit song "A Moment Like This" on the bus at the end of every tournament
Arianna Erceg -
My favorite Cal softball tradition is the games we play off the field, which include "Just Dance" for the Wii and Ninja!
Jolene Henderson -
Of course my favorite Cal tradition would revolve around food. I love it when we go to Hawaii and eat at Benihana. Not only because we're in Hawaii, but because I love Benihana!
Volunteer Assistant Coach Angie Jacobs -
My favorite tradition when I was playing here was when we would come back from the holiday break for spring semester, we would always get together and do something as a team. Before school started, we would always do something like go to Tahoe or have dinner at someone's house. It was always so great to spend time with everyone.
Victoria Jones -
My favorite tradition would have to be playing Ninja.
Assistant Coach Tammy Lohmann -
The family atmosphere. We provide a different environment for our kids. I think we have a lot of fun. We get to know them on all different levels. We also challenge them to be better people every day.
Head Coach Diane Ninemire -
I like the family atmosphere with all the families supporting the team. Seeing the players and the team and the fans come together and enjoy each others' company and enjoy the moments, I think that's really special to see. It's not just about the wins and the losses but the relationships. I think we do a good job of keeping that family atmosphere here at Cal and the tradition of having fun off the field as well as having so much fun on the field.
Assistant Coach John Reeves -
I like it when we win.
Jamia Reid -
I would have to say "Bear Pride" because who you stand next to stays the same all year and it's a ritual before every game.
Alex Robben -
Hawaii!!!!!! It is so beautiful, and I love to play out there.
Taylor Vincent -
My favorite Cal softball tradition is playing Ninja during warm-ups before we do our dynamic warm-up.
Britt Vonk -
When we say "Bears Peace" after every practice.
Jordan Wallace -
My favorite Cal softball tradition would have to be playing Ninja!
Jace Williams -
My favorite would have to be dinner at Benihana in Hawaii. Every year we have dinner together at Benihana, and it is always delicious. By the end of the season I think I have been to at least 5,929,484 different Walmarts. Wandering around Walmart with the twins is always a good time.

I really like our first inning cheer. When I first got to Cal, the older players taught it to us younger players. It's the only cheer that everyone participates in, and when we do it right, it sounds intimidating and awesome!
