IRVINE, CALIF. - Bolstered by an outstanding match from junior Hunter Gettelfinger, the No. 6 ranked Cal men's water polo team defeated No. 9-ranked UC Irvine, 12-10, Thursday night (Nov. 1) in an MPSF contest at Anteater Pool in Irvine. Gettelfinger paced the Golden Bears with a team-high four goals and four steals as Kirk Everist's squad improved to 11-7 and 2-3 in the conference.
Sophomore Aleksa Saponjic was also stellar for Cal with three goals, while sophomore goalie Jon Sibley notched 11 saves. The Bears win over the Anteaters avenged Cal's 13-11 loss to UC Irvine on Sept. 29 at the SoCal Tournament in Santa Barbara.
Besides the scoring of Gettelfinger and Saponjic, senior captain Marin Balarin and junior Collin Smith added two goals apiece, and redshirt freshman Colin Mulcahy also scored for the Bears. Smith and Saponjic are Cal's top two scorers this season with 48 and 33 goals, respectively.
"This match was not pretty, but the guys played strong and got a win," said Everist. "We had to play a lot of five-man defense tonight and made the plays down the stretch that we need to."
Cal next travels to Pepperdine, Friday, Nov. 2 for a 3 p.m. match in Malibu. Earlier this season the Bears defeated the Waves, 12-9, Sept. 30 at the SoCal Tournament in Santa Barbara.
