Cal Baseball Dominated By No. 3 Ranked Long Beach State

BERKELEY, CA - The University of California baseball team was crushed by No. 3 ranked Long Beach State, 24-4, Friday at Evans Diamond. The Bears go to 2-6 on the year, while the 49ers improve to 3-1.

Led by the phenomenal hitting of Jaeme Leal, Abel Orozco and Jeff Jones; and the solid pitching of Mike Gallo, Long Beach State had its way with Cal in the first game of a three-game series. Leal was 4-for-7 with three home runs and six RBI, Orozco was 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Jones was 4-for-7 with a home run and three RBI. Gallo (1-0) picked up his first win of the season by going 6.0 innings with seven hits, two runs, two walks and four strikeouts.

Leal's three home runs in a single game tied a Long Beach State school record.

The 49ers pounded out 26 hits against six Cal pitchers, and had six home runs, including back-to-back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning (Jones, Terrmel Sledge, Leal). Long Beach State also had two home runs in its eight-run fourth inning (Leal, Greg Dobbs). The losing pitcher for the Bears was starter Jason Dennis (0-3), who went 3.3 innings with 12 hits, 12 runs, two walks and a strikeout.

Mike Tonis (2-for-2) and David Sark (2-for-4) had two hits for Cal, and Xavier Nady (1-for-4, two RBI) hit a solo home run in the sixth and had a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.

The Bears will play the second game of the three-game series against Long Beach State Saturday, Feb. 13 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.

Home Runs: Long Beach State: Leal, two-run homer in the first. Leal, three-run homer in the fourth. Dobbs, two-run homer in the fourth. Jones, solo home run in the ninth. Sledge, solo home run in the ninth. Leal, solo home run in the ninth. Cal: Nady, solo home run in the sixth.
