The No. 8 California women's tennis team (18-5, 6-2 Pac-10) defeated No. 27 LSU (15-10, 6-5 SEC), 4-0, in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Tournament today at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif. The Golden Bears will advance to the round of 16 for the 22nd time in program history to face No. 9 Duke.

Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said, "We expect tough matches every round but we are prepared for different conditions and all of the extra distractions. Our mindset is going to have to be to minimize the outside things and focus on the task at hand. We've been taking the season one match at a time so we're very excited to move on."

The Bears got a quick boost by earning the doubles point over the Tigers when junior Bojana Bobusic and senior Cristina Visico got an 8-5 win over Nicole Kantor and Staten Spencer on court three. Cal's all-France duo of junior Claire Ilcinkas and freshman Marina Cossou was the first doubles team off the courts, taking an 8-0 win against Hannah Robinson and Tiffany Tucker on the second court. Play on court one was suspended with the completion of the doubles point.

The Bears went to a 2-0 lead right away when Ilcinkas got the 6-3, 6-1 win over Kantor on singles court No. 4. After opening her match with a slow start, Cossou got into a groove and reeled off a 6-2, 6-0 win on the second court over Mykala Hedberg. The Bears didn't have to wait long before Visico closed out the Tigers with her 6-3, 6-0 win against Robinson on the third court.

LSU had made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament as a team for the first time since 1995 but were not able to stay close with the Bears who took first-set wins on all six singles courts and were on the way to sweeping the doubles point as well.

Cal will travel to Tulsa, Okla. to meet No. 9 Duke in the round of 16 next week at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa, host institution to this year's NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Tennis Championships.
