BERKELEY - For only the second time in the last 20 years, the Golden Bears will not advance to the NCAA Round of 16. The No. 14 California women's tennis team lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 16 Fresno State in the second round regional championship of the 2004 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament at Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley on Sunday. Cal won the doubles point but lost on courts one, two, and three in singles competition to force a season-deciding sixth singles match on court six.

With the loss, California concludes its season with a 17-9 record. It is only the second time Fresno State has defeated Cal in school history and both occurrences happened this season. Fresno State defeated Cal, 4-2, on February 21 in Berkeley.

The Golden Bears got off to a strong start, as Cal's Sasha Podkolzina and Catherine Lynch powered past Fresno State's Courtney Jantz and Vlatka Jovanovic, 8-1, on court three. Cal's No. 47-ranked duo of Nicole Havlicek and Jody Scheldt defeated Fresno State's Kathrin Winterhalter and Lucia Sainz on court two to give the Bears the doubles point. It was only the fourth time this season Fresno State has lost the doubles point in a dual match.

In singles competition, however, the Golden Bears ran into trouble as Cal's No. 1-ranked Raquel Kops-Jones and No. 86-ranked Jieun Jacobs both lost in straight sets on courts one and two respectively. Cal managed to claim victories on courts four and five, as Podkolzina and Havlicek both won their respective matches, giving the Bears a 3-2 advantage, but when Cal's Lynch fell to Fresno State's Winterhalter, 6-3, 7-5, on court three, the score was tied at 3-3 and all eyes were focused on the last remaining match on court six. In a three-set thriller, Fresno State's Courtney Jantz finally overcame Cal's Jessica Shu, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Fresno State advances to the NCAA Round of 16 in Athens, Ga. where the Bulldogs will play Georgia on May 20.
