SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior Alex Sutton drove in two of No. 6/7 California's four runs as the Golden Bears defeated Santa Clara, 4-3, Wednesday. Sutton finished 2-for-3 at the plate as Cal improved to 37-6 on the season. Santa Clara dropped to 15-27.
Cal scored two runs in the second, one in the third and one in the fifth. Santa Clara cut Cal's lead to 3-1 in the third inning and 4-3 in the fifth inning on a two-run homer from Jessica Clee. Neither team scored after that point.
Freshman Lauren Frankiewicz improved to 11-1 on the season, going four innings and striking out seven. Senior Kristina Thorson entered the game in the fifth inning with no outs. Thorson got a strike out, a ground out and a line out to halt the Broncos' momentum after Clee's two-run shot. She threw three innings, holding the Broncos scoreless while giving up one hit and striking out four of 10 batters for her fifth save of the season.
In the second inning, freshman designated player Gina Leomiti hit an RBI single to center field, scoring sophomore Katie Vickers, who led off the inning with a single to left. Sophomore Erika Racklin then drove Leomiti home on an RBI single.
Sutton's RBI single plated senior Haley Woods in the third inning, putting Cal up 3-0. Woods led off the inning with a single to left.
Freshman Carly Winger, who went 2-for-3 on the day, scored the Bears' final run on a sacrifice fly by Sutton. Winger led off the inning with a double to right. Leomiti was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bears.
Cal hosts No. 8/10 Arizona State and No. 3 Arizona this weekend. The Bears face ASU at 3 p.m. Friday, and Arizona Saturday and Sunday, with both games at 1 p.m.
