BERKELEY - California has been ranked No. 12 in the USA Today Top 25 Coaches' Preseason Poll released on Friday. The ranking equaled the highest the Golden Bears have been ranked in the preseason since Jeff Tedford became the team's head coach and marked the fifth time in the last seven years Cal has been ranked in the coaches' poll prior to the season. The Bears were also ranked No. 12 in both 2003 and 2006, while garnering a No. 15 ranking in 2004 and No. 20 in 2005.
Defending national champion Florida is the country's top-ranked team and received 53 of the 59 first-place votes. Texas is ranked second and picked up four first-place votes while Oklahoma, USC and Alabama round out the first five teams in the poll with the Sooners and Trojans each receiving one first-place selection.
The Top 10 was rounded out by Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Penn State, LSU and Mississippi.
The remainder of the Top 25 started with No. 11 Mississippi State and also included in order Cal, Georgia, Oregon, Georgia Tech, Boise State, Boise State, TCU, Utah, Florida State, North Carolina, Iowa, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Brigham Young and Oregon State.
Cal was one of four Pac-10 teams (No. 4 USC, No. 12 Cal, No. 14 Oregon, No. 25 Oregon State) in the poll.
The Golden Bears will hold their first training camp practice on Friday and begin their 2009 campaign with a nationally televised ESPN2 contest against Maryland at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 5 (7:00 p.m., PT).
