BERKELEY - Thu.-Sat. March 24-26 at 2011 NCAA Championships, Dorothy L. Sheppard Pool, Minneapolis, Minn. All Day

This Week:
The No. 1-ranked California men's swimming and diving team (4-1, 3-1 Pac-10) - which in 2009-10 placed second at the NCAA championships with three individual champions (Nathan Adrian 100 free, Damir Dugonjic 100 breast, Tom Shields 100 fly) and four relay titles (200 and 400 free, 200 and 400 medley) - competes at the 2011 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships this week (Thu.-Sat.) at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. Prelims will be at noon and finals at 7 p.m. CT each day (for complete meet information, live stats and live streaming click 2011 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship homepage). ESPN2 will be airing a 90-minute show recapping the 2011 NCAA championships on Wednesday, April 6 at 1:30 ET (10:30 a.m. PT). Fourth-year head coach David Durden, the 2010 Pac-10 and NCAA Coach of the Meet, has another talented squad that not only includes seniors Adrian and Dugonjic and sophomore standout Shields (2010 Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year, 2011 Pac-10 championships Swimmer of the Meet), but three other NCAA relay champions (seniors Guy Barnea, Graeme Moore, Josh Daniels) and six additional 2010 All-Americans - senior Martti Aljand, juniors Mathias Gydesen, Martin Liivamagi, Nolan Koon and Robert Sullivan, and sophomore Ben Hinshaw.

Golden Bears Gear Up For NCAA Championships:
The Bears' top individual candidates for national crowns this season include Adrian (Bremerton, Wash.), who is seeded first in the nation in the 50 free (18.91) and 100 free (41.75). He is the two-time defending NCAA champion in the 100 free and won the 50 free title in 2009. Dugonjic (Ravne na Koroskern, Slovenia) is another Cal favorite as he is the top seed in the 100 breast with a time of 51.88; while Shields (Huntington Beach, Calif.) is the No. 1 seed in the 200 fly (1:40.31), No. 2 seed in the 100 fly (44.78) and No. 3 seed in the 100 back (45.65). Other top seeded swimmers include Koon (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) who is seeded second in the 100 breast (52.54) and fourth in the 200 breast (1:54.42), Aljand (Tallinn, Estonia) who is seeded third in the 100 breast (52.74) and senior Nick Ferrif (Lafayette, Calif.) who is seeded fourth in the 100 breast (52.76). Cal's relays are among the nation's best as well. The Bears' 200 free relay (1:16.35, Adrian, Moore, Daniels, Shields), 200 medley relay (1:23.92, Barnea, Dugonjic, Moore, Adrian) and 400 free relay (2:48.16, Adrian, Moore, Daniels, Shields) are seeded first, and Cal's 400 medley relay (3:05.29, Barnea, Dugonjic, Shields, Adrian) is seeded second.

2009-10 in Review:
At the 2010 NCAA championships, the Bears won at least one national title each of the three days on their way to seven championships and a runner-up team finish. Cal captured the 200 free relay (1:15.71, Adrian, Moore, Daniels, Barnea) to open the meet and then placed first in the 400 medley relay (3:02.83, Barnea, Dugonjic, Shields, Adrian) to wrap-up day one. The Bears added three more titles in day two with Shields' victory in the 100 fly in school record 44.91, Dugonjic's repeat title in the 100 breast (51.65) and a win in the 200 medley relay (1:23.08, Barnea, Dugonjic, Moore, Daniels). On day three Adrian repeated as national champion in the 100 free (41.50) and Cal's 400 free relay team (Moore, Daniels, Shields, Adrian) won the meet's final event (2:48.78). The Bears' second place NCAA finish was the best for Cal since it was runner-up in 1986 with Matt Biondi. The Bears' four NCAA relay titles were also the most in school history. Cal returns 12 of 14 All-Americans from last season, including all members of the 200, 400 free and 200 and 400 medley relays.

Head Coach David Durden:
David Durden is in his fourth season at Cal, owning a 20-7 (.741) dual meet record, three-straight Pac-10 second-place finishes and a runner-up finish at the 2010 NCAA championships. Durden was both the 2010 Pac-10 Coach of the Year and NCAA Coach of the Meet. He mentored three individual national champions (Nathan Adrian 100 free, Damir Dugonjic 100 breast, Tom Shields 100 fly) and four relay national titles (200 and 400 free relays, 200 and 400 medley relays). Durden joined the Golden Bears in 2007 upon the retirement of Hall of Fame coach Nort Thornton, who is now Head Coach Emeritus.
