BERKELEY - No. 1 UCLA scored two runs in the fourth inning and defeated the No. 5 California softball team, 2-0, at Levine-Fricke Field Thursday. The Bruins clinched the Pac-10 title with the win. Cal falls to 42-12 overall and 10-9 in Pac-10 play. UCLA improves to 43-5 and 15-3.

Senior Kristina Thorson (30-8) threw all seven innings, giving up seven hits and striking out seven.

Cal had more than a few clutch defensive plays along the way, including a diving catch by senior left fielder Lindsay James in the first inning. In the fifth, sophomore first baseman Julie Meyer caught a pop-up bunt and picked off a Bruin base runner for the double play. In the seventh, senior catcher Haley Woods picked off a Bruin runner at second base.

The Bears weren't without their opportunities on offense, leaving nine runners on base. With two outs in the first inning, senior Emily Friedman singled to reach base and advanced when Woods walked. Cal ended the inning with a strikeout.

With two outs in the third, Cal had runners on first and second - junior Alex Sutton with a walk and Woods with an intentional walk - but the inning ended on a fielder's choice. The fifth inning went much the same way. With James on first base, Woods was intentionally walked. The inning ended on a groundout to second base.

UCLA scored its first run on an RBI single from catcher Emily Zaplatosch. Second baseman Caitlyn Benyi scored UCLA's other run on a sacrifice fly from shortstop Jodie Legaspi. Sophomore Anjelica Selden improved to 28-4 with the win. It was just the fourth time the Bears had been shut out this season.

Cal closes out the regular season with a two-game series against No. 17 Washington Friday and Saturday. Both games start at 1 p.m.
