BERKELEY - Former California men's rower Spencer Crowley won two silver medals as part of the eight and the four for Canada at the 2011 Pan American Games at the Canoe & Rowing Course in Ciudad Guzman, Guadalajara. Crowley was the stroke in both races.
In the eight, the Canadians clocked a time of 5:41.01. The U.S. won the gold with a time of 5:39.32 and Argentina placed third (5:41.77), just getting beat to the finish line by Crowley and the Canadians. After opening the race in third, Canada fell to fourth in the second leg. The Canadians then posted the best third-leg time of 1:25.46 to move into second place, which they held to the finish line.
In the four, Argentina edged Canada to the finish line with a time of 6:04.41 to claim first. Canada garnered a second-place time of 6:05.65, while Cuba took third at 6:06.51. Canada fell to fourth in the second leg, but slowly started creeping back into the race, moving back into third in the third leg. The Canadians then clocked the best time in the fourth leg at 1:27.42 to win the silver. The U.S. came in fifth, boasting a time of 6:07.85.
Crowley, a three-year letterman who graduated in 2011, had previously placed fourth at the Under 23 World Championships last summer in the four. Named to the Pac-10 All-Conference team in 2011, Crowley was part of the Golden Bears' IRA national-champion varsity eight boat in 2010 and the national-champion freshman eight in 2008.
