BERKELEY - Center Shahar Gordon, who just completed his freshman season with the Bears, has received an additional one-year deferment from his Israeli military commitment and will return to Cal next season.

Gordon, from Tel Aviv, Israel, had a deferment that allowed him to play for the Bears this past season, but had to re-apply to be able to play next year.

During Cal's 1998-99 season, the 6-10, 240-pound Gordon appeared in 28 of the Bears 33 games, gaining starts against Stanford, USC and UCLA. He averaged 1.2 points and 1.2 rebounds, while adding 17 assists and eight blocks.

Gordon is one of six players returning from Cal's NIT championship squad. The others are junior guard/forward Carl Boyd, freshman guard Dennis Gates, freshman forward/center Solomon Hughes, junior guard Raymond King and sophomore forward Sean Lampley.
