In the week leading up to the IRA National Championships, members of the Cal Crew are highlighted. Each oarsman discusses some of their favorite things, and what they do in preparation for a race. Today, freshman Morgan Allen is profiled.
Allen, from San Francisco, will row in the two seat of the freshman eight boat this weekend at the IRA National Championships. He has helped the freshman eight to an undefeated season thus far, and will try to lead the Bears to one more win, this time for a national championship.

Q: How did you get involved in crew? A: When I was younger I swam competitively, but when I hurt my shoulder I had to give it up. My sister was rowing at the time so my parents wanted me to try it out.
Q: Why did you choose to come to Cal? A: Rowing, it's close to my home and it's a good public school.
Q: At the beginning of the season, what is the one thing you most look forward to? What is the thing you dread the most? A: Since Cal has a reputation of being a top rowing school; I looked forward to becoming stronger and a better oarsman. I was also excited to be out on my own. I had heard rumors about the freshman coach at Cal, which is why I dreaded facing his wrath the most. (Which I did quite often)
Q: What is your pre-race routine/superstition? A: I always like to make my competition out to be stronger than me and that no one expects me to win. I do this because I don't have to worry about other's expectations and I can focus more on the task at hand, and it's why I am more nervous for easy races than the big ones. I also do that so I bring more intensity to my racing.
Q: What are the last 3 CD's you bought? A: The last CD I can remember that I bought was Believe by Disturbed.
Q: If you were stranded on a desert island, who would you bring with you, and what 3 things would you want to take? A: 1. Gu 2. A rifle 3. A boat
Q: What is your greatest achievement in crew? A: Winning PAC-10's by 9 seconds, San Diego Crew Classic by 8 seconds, and being a contender to win a national championship.
Q: What do you do in your spare time? A: Watch movies
Q: If you could trade places with anyone (celebrity or not) who would it be? Why? A: Bill Gates because he is filthy rich
Q: Who/what inspires you? A: My family and my coach. My family because they have made sacrifices for me so I could succeed in crew and at Cal. My coach because he knows no limits.
Q: What is the one song/type of music that you think should be banned from the erg room? A: Anything that can be related to Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera
