California head coach Jeff Tedford:
On Cal's running game:
"They (Southern Miss) do a tremendous job of pressuring the passer and a lot of things to try and slow you down. It limits your game plan and shortens your playbook a little bit. We tried to make sure we zone blocked a lot of things. Our offensive line did a nice job of getting push and the backs did an excellent job of running."
"Our backs ran very hard and when they get to the open field, they were really able to turn it on and get some good gains."
"Our offensive line did a nice job of knocking people off. We felt coming out after halftime that we needed to run the football and be physical. We challenged our offensive linemen to be physical and they responded. They did a nice job."
On Cal's defense
: "The Defense played awesome. They swarmed to the football. They put pressure on the passer. They (Southern Miss) had four downs from the one-yard line and our Defense did an excellent job of keeping them out of the end zone. They still need to tackle a little bit better, but for the most part, we improved with our tackling and we covered very well in the secondary."
On Southern Miss's goal line stances:
"(They were) very frustrating. It goes back to last week a little bit. A lot of people thought we should have run a quarterback sneak when we had six inches to go. That's exactly why you don't. I felt like we had to give it a shot to see if we could punch it in there. Those guys (Southern Miss) are big and physical, and they have everybody plugging the gaps. They did a nice job. We will definitely address that this week. When we get the ball on the one yard line, we have to punch it in."
On Cal's Special Teams:
"Special Teams did a great job getting after the punter. It was the first game in Division 1 for their (Southern Miss's) center and punter, so it was our goal going in to try and put some pressure on them. Our guys did a good job of getting through and blocking punts. I felt like our Special Teams, all in all, played pretty well."
On James Bethea's blocked punt recovery:
"(Blocked punt recoveries) always give you some momentum. That was early in the game, though, and there was still a lot of game left to play. But that was definitely a shot in the arm because we were struggling a little bit offensively, so I felt like after that, the defense just kept playing hard and we made some adjustments on offense."
On Adimchinobe Echemandu's touchdown run:
"I'm sure that will boost his confidence, no question about it. All along we've said that Joe (Adimchinobe Echemandu) is not only the kind of guy that is powerful- he ran hard today and between the tackles- but when he gets in the open field, he has the speed to go. Southern Miss has a lot of speed on their team, so when he got to the secondary, it was great to see him turn it on. That should do a lot for his confidence."
CB James Bethea
"I'm not getting the time I want. I'm just going to try to make plays. I'm going to do everything I can to make plays on special teams. This is my role right now, special teams. I'm going to try to be an All-American."
TB J.J. Arrington
"I was ready to play. Whenever they need me I'll be ready to play. The offensive line was awesome today. We worked a lot on the running game during the week so we knew we were going to run the ball this week."
On the closeness of the team:
"Most everybody is a transfer. You get tighter in practice everyday. You get to know each other better. We're a good, big family right now. Really nice and tight."
P/PK Tyler Fredrickson
"It's exactly what I've wanted to do. One of my goals since I got here 5 years ago was to come out and do all three - kickoffs, field goals and punting, so for me this is something I've looked forward to and something that I've humbly expected. For me, this was the most fun game I've ever played in because I finally got to accomplish all three. I felt like I worked really hard in the off-season, I've waited for it, and coach is now giving me the opportunity."
Southern Miss head coach Jeff Bower
"You just have to give Cal credit. Jeff Tedford - they whipped us in the ballgame. I thought we played well offensively in the first half. The longer the game went on, we just gave up too many plays."
"On offense we started out doing some pretty good things, but we had mental errors. We have things to work out. Offensively, we were really inconsistent."
"We didn't make short yardage. We dropped a touchdown. We had chances to make plays."
"In the second half, we talked about making things happen and we got a turnover, but we didn't do anything with it."
"It's disappointing. We'll all regroup. It's a long season. It's one game, not the whole season. We'll react in a positive way. There's too many good leaders on this team. We'll bounce back."
On postgame comments to the team
"I told them it's a setback. We have too much character. We worked too darn hard. We'll have setbacks, but we'll keep working hard."
On the second half
"We didn't tackle as well. That hurt us. They blitzed us a few times and that got us."
Southern Miss Players
Mickey D'Angelo, QB
On Cal's physical effort:
"They played tough. They got through a few times and caused some problems. It was frustrating that we couldn't convert on third down. They played good as a team. All 11 guys were playing their butts off."
On being shut out on offense:
"Being shut out was definitely a surprise. But we still have our conference schedule and we have to look forward to that."
Terrell Paul, DE
"Well we missed some tackles and we had a lot of young guys out on the field today playing in their first college game. We just didn't execute. You always want to start out with a win. Its not how you start but how you finish."
