STANFORD, Calif. - The California women's tennis team begins play at the 2007 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional tournament today in Stanford, Calif. In addition to host school Stanford and Cal, this regional includes top players from the following Northwest region schools: Cal Poly, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Nevada, Oregon, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, UC Davis, Washington and Washington State.

There are a total of eight regional tournaments throughout the country that help determine the field of participants for the ITA National Indoor Championships held in Columbus, Ohio from Nov. 1-4. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion emerging from this weekends' play will earn berths into the ITA National Indoor Championships. Senior Susie Babos has already secured entry into the championships by virtue of winning the 2007 All-American Championship title but will still be participating at the regional as the top-seeded singles entry.

In doubles play, Babos and senior Stephanie Kusano team up to form the fifth-seeded duo while junior Claire Ilcinkas and freshman Marina Cossou enter play as the eight-seed in the doubles draw. Both singles and doubles entries that are eliminated in the first round of play will be entered into respective consolation draws.
