SANTA CLARA, Calif. - California freshman Chris Cortez scored his first Cal goal and redshirt freshman goalkeeper Stefan Frei made nine saves as the 11th-ranked Golden Bears men's soccer team held 20th-ranked Santa Clara to a 1-1 tie in double overtime in the finale of the Bay Area Classic on Sunday at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Bears' record moved to 0-1-1 (0-0-0 Pac-10), while Santa Clara's record moved to 1-0-1 (0-0-0 WCC).
By virtue of its wins over Cal, on Friday, and Stanford, 2-0, tonight, San Francisco won the Bay Area Classic.
Against Santa Clara, Cortez, a forward, got Cal on the scoreboard in the 39th minute, heading in senior midfielder Nick Hatzke's corner kick to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
The Broncos tied the game at 1-1 in the 39th minute. Santa Clara forward Keith DeVey took a shot that hit the goalpost and rebounded to SCU midfielder Jeff Cosgriff, who scored from 15 yards out.
The second overtime was uneventful. But in the first overtime, Cal had a good chance to retake the lead when forward Javier Ayala-Hil had an open shot from 10 yards away in the 96th minute. The ball hit the bottom of the crossbar and landed just outside the goalline before Santa Clara cleared it.
Santa Clara outshot Cal, 14-13, in the taut match.
The Bears return to action when they take on Florida International at 5 p.m. CT on Friday, Sept. 1, in Dallas, Texas, as part of the adidas SMU Classic. Cal then plays the host Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 2.
