BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 3-ranked California men's water polo team (12-2) won its first two matches of the 2005 NorCal Open, defeating UC Santa Cruz, 18-2, in its morning match, and then topping No. 8-ranked Long Beach State, 9-8, in the afternoon contest at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
True freshman Shea Buckner paced the Golden Bears with four goals against UC Santa Cruz, followed by two goals apiece from junior Brian Kinsel, senior Tom Kurth and sophomore Zac Monsees. Freshman goalie Marc Vacquier notched six saves.
Against Long Beach State, Cal exploded for five goals in the second period and held on for the win. Sophomore Michael Sharf was the scoring leader for the Bears with three goals, including clinching the match with a goal with 2:16 left in regulation. Junior Brian Bacharach added two goals and senior goalie Nate Bennett tallied an impressive 12 saves.
The Bears will next face No. 1 ranked and defending national champion UCLA at 10:20 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 16 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal has already faced the Bruins twice this season, defeating UCLA, 8-7 in overtime, in third-place match of the SoCal Open, Sept. 18 in Irvine. On Oct. 8, the Bears fell to the Bruins, 7-4, at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center.
