BERKELEY - California seniors Andrew Jacobson and Luke Sassano have been invited to the 2008 adidas MLS Player Combine, the professional league announced today. This marks the fourth consecutive year that there has been representation by the Golden Bears in the event.
The annual MLS Combine, which will feature 54 players from 33 Division I colleges, will take place from Jan. 11-15 at Lockhart Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The coaching and management staffs from all 14 teams will be in attendance to scout talent at the Combine, which concludes three days before the 2008 MLS SuperDraft on Friday, Jan. 18, in Baltimore, Md.
"This is a tremendous honor for Andrew and Luke," said Cal head coach Kevin Grimes. "They have had tremendous careers here at Cal. We will miss them for sure, but feel very fortunate that they will have an outstanding opportunity to play soccer at the next level."
The Combine will separate all players into four teams and feature two games per day at Lockhart Stadium on Jan. 12, 13 and 15. Each team will be led by an experienced Division I coach and will be assigned a youth coach.
Jacobson was also named the Pac-10 Co-Player of the Year and garnered All-Pac-10 first-team honors. In addition, he was recently selected to the NSCAA Far West All-Region first team. Jacobson, a midfielder from Palo Alto, Calif., tied for the team lead in shots (44), collected 11 points (4 goals, 3 assists) and had 15 shots on goal. On Senior Day against UCLA on Nov. 4, Jacobson scored in his final regular-season home match. Jacobson also got Cal's first goal in the Bears' 2-1 victory over UC Davis in the first round of the NCAA College Cup on Nov. 23.
Sassano, who was one of the team's three captains this season along with Jacobson and Javier Ayala-Hil, ended the regular season on a high note, notching five points (1 goal, 3 assists). Against UCLA on Senior Day, Sassano had one assist and scored the game-winning goal. He also recorded two assists in the NCAA first-round match against the Aggies. Earlier this month, Sassano, a defender/midfielder from Orinda, Calif., earned Pac-10 all-academic honorable mention honors.
