BOSTON, MA. - The California men's crew team won the Youth Eights event in the 42nd annual Head of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River in Boston, Mass. The freshman boat defeated 79 other schools with a time of 15:01.523. The Golden Bears just beat out Princeton for first, as the Tigers finished second at 15:02.949.
Princeton led for the most of the race. It wasn't until the end when the Golden Bears took the lead for good. Cal and Princeton both finished 20 seconds ahead of the third place team, the Charles River Rowing Association.
Cal entered two boats in the regatta, as it raced in the Championship Eights event in addition to the Youth Eights.
The Bears placed 11th overall and seventh collegiately in the Championship Eight event with a time of 14:38.419. The U.S. national team took first in this race, clocking in at 14:09.7, followed by Washington, as the Huskies crossed the finish line at 14:21.9.
