The No. 9 California Golden Bears (3-8) are back at home for the first time since January to host the No. 12 (10-3) Temple Owls in a dual meet beginning at 2 p.m. in Haas Pavilion. Admission is free.
Cal has not competed at home since its first meet of the season on Jan. 13, when the Bears dropped a 425.00-411.150 decision to Stanford. The team's scores have improved immensely since, with Cal's best score coming as a 426.450 loss at Stanford on Feb. 17.
Last week, the Bears placed third (422.750) at the Collegiate Challenge in Palo Alto, where they faced the Japanese Collegiate National Team (438.850), No. 5 Stanford (431.20), the Arizona State club team (389.90) and University of Washington training team (357.70). Cal gymnasts claimed at least a share of the top three spots in three of the night's events. The floor event's first-ranked gymnast in the country, junior Takahiro Kawada posted a 14.700 for second place, and senior Steven Lacombe shared third for his 15.150 effort on the still rings.
It was also the first time the gymnasts experiences the new "five up, five count" scoring system, in which teams can only enter five gymnasts per event, and all five gymnasts' scores count.
In Temple's last meet, the Owls swept all six event at a dual-meet at SUNY Brockport. The team easily handled the Golden Eagles, posting a final total of 394.150-258.100.
