LOS ANGELES - Neither seventh-ranked California or No. 23 UCLA could find the back of the net as their Friday night match at Drake Stadium ended in a 0-0 tie. Golden Bears' goalkeeper Stefan Frei recorded seven saves en route to earning his sixth clean sheet of the season.
Sophomore Andrew Wiedeman led the Bears (7-2-5, 2-1-3) with three shots on goal, while fellow sophomore Servando Carrasco took a total of five shots, two of which were on goal. Senior Pat Marion also had two shots on goal.
The Bruins (7-4-6, 5-1-2) were relentless in trying to put the game's first tally on the board in the second overtime, forcing Frei to make three saves. Frei also made three saves in the second half of regulation. His 17 career shutouts rank him fifth on Cal's all-time list. His counterpart, UCLA keeper Brian Perk, also collected seven saves.
Cal outshot the Bruins, 23-20.
Cal will now head further south and face San Diego State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in San Diego.
