BERKELEY - The No. 9 California men's soccer team downed Stanford, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium in front of a crowd of 765, to finish the regular season of play. Cal wraps-up the regular season 13-3-2 overall and 6-3-1 in the Pac-10, while Stanford falls to 4-11-3, 1-7-2 in conference play.

Cal is in second place in the Pac-10, behind UCLA who clinched its fourth-consecutive Pac-10 title last weekend after recording a 1-1 tie with Cal, and earned an automatic NCAA tournament bid. Even without the automatic bid, Cal expects to receive its fifth-consecutive postseason selection when bids are announced tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. PT.

"We really want to thank our community for coming out and supporting our team the last two games," said head coach Kevin Grimes. "The crowds have been vocal and enthusiastic, we can't thank our local soccer community enough for their support of our team. Hopefully they get another chance to root on the home team again this year."

Cal got off to a strong start when junior midfielder Eric Ebert put the Bears on the board in the second minute. Junior midfielder Andrew Jacobson took a corner kick from the right side of the field to set the ball in action. Ebert was positioned in front of the goal and headed the ball into the net, recording his third goal and second gamewinning goal of the season.

Less than 20 minutes later Jacobson scored his fourth goal of the 2005 regular season campaign and put the Bears ahead, 2-0. Senior forward Calen Carr passed the ball to Jacobson, who landed the wide-open shot from 20 yards out past Stanford's keeper, Andrew Kartunen. Carr recorded his fourth assist of the season.

With five minutes remaining in the first half, freshman midfielder Pat Marion checked into the game. Junior defender Justin Delacruz crossed the ball to Marion, who headed the ball into the net at 40:05 from five yards out, and gave Cal a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into halftime. Marion recorded his first career goal as a Bear.

In the 59th minute Carr recorded his 11th goal of the season, when he scored Cal's fourth goal of the afternoon. Sassano crossed the ball to Carr who found the open net from the left side of the field. Sassano tallied his seventh assist for the season and is currently leading the Bears in that category.

With 15 minutes left in the game and Cal ahead 4-0, junior goalkeeper Mike Oseguera stepped in for senior keeper Eric Kronberg. Head coach Kevin Grimes also decided to sub in some of the freshmen who have seen limited playing time this year. Seeing action were Brad Yuska, Ryan Villalpando, J.T. Terrazas, Michael Nieraeth and junior Matt Holtrust.

In the 80th minute Stanford's Tunji Munabi scored for the Cardinal when he found the open net from five yards back. Munabi took three of Stanford's six shots.

Cal outshot Stanford, 13-6, with 10 of those shots being on goal. Kartunen recorded six saves for the Cardinal.

Seniors Pieter Berger, Calen Carr, Angel Quintero, Eric Kronberg and Tyson Wahl played their last regular-season home game Sunday afternoon and were honored before the game as they walked out with their parents.
