STANFORD, Calif. - A first-inning quick strike turned out to be enough for No. 4 California to complete the Saturday afternoon doubleheader sweep of No. 11 Stanford at Smith Family Stadium, ultimately defeating the Cardinal 6-0 in Pac-10 Conference play.
California (35-6, 3-3 Pac-10) struck in the top of the first inning, scoring two quick runs on RBI's from sophomore catcher Haley Woods and junior shortstop Chelsea Spencer. The Golden Bears added another four runs in the third to secure the victory.
Sophomore Laura Severson took the loss for Stanford (30-10, 3-3 Pac-10), allowing two runs on five hits over 4.2 innings. Sophomore pitcher Kristina Thorson collected the win for California, scattering two hits over seven innings with four strikeouts.
Cal sophomore left fielder Lindsay James went 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Spencer also contributed two hits in Cal's win.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, April 13, when they travel to Santa Clara for a non-conference game scheduled for 3 p.m.
