BERKELEY - The No. 12 California men's soccer team fell to No. 25 Washington, 1-0, this afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Both teams played hard, but Washington came out with the win and improves to 8-3-1, 2-2-1 in the Pac-10, while Cal drops to 9-3-1, 2-3 in the Pac-10.
Both teams went scoreless in the first half, with Washington taking five shots, while Cal recorded four. Junior midfielder Eric Ebert and sophomore midfielder Andrew Jacobson had good looks at the goal with opportunities to score, but the Huskies goalkeeper Chris Eylander stopped the ball from reaching the net.
In the 53rd minute, Washington's senior midfielder Evan Cummings, was issued a yellow caution card for dissent. One minute later senior midfielder Jeff Hoover put the Huskies on the board when he scored the eventual game-winning goal. Midfielder Leo Totev passed the ball to Hoover, who was positioned about 12 yards out in the penalty box and found the open net past Cal's keeper, Erik Kronberg. Kronberg recorded three saves for the Bears this afternoon.
The Huskies outshot the Bears 11-7, with Washington tallying four shots on goal. Cal's Calen Carr and Michael Nieraeth and Washington's Jeff Hoover, were all issued yellow caution cards in the second half of play for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Bears travel to the northwest next weekend to face Washington on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. Cal then travels south to Corvallis where they will take on Oregon State, Sunday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.
