Vollmer Stars at U.S. National Championships

INDIANAPOLIS - California junior Dana Vollmer posted four top-five finishes at the recently completed 2007 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships. Vollmer, a 2004 U.S. Olympic gold medalist, placed second in the 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter freestyle, took third in the 100-meter freestyle and claimed fourth in the 200-meter butterfly.

The product of Granbury, Texas, swam a 2:10.47 on July 31 to place fourth in the 200 fly. One day later she clocked a 54.95 for third in the 100 free and swam the anchor leg of the California Aquatics' team's fourth-place 4x100 free relay. Junior teammate Lauren Rogers and former Golden Bear Ashley Chandler also swam on the relay.

Vollmer took second in the 100 fly in 58.48 on Aug. 2 and on Aug. 3 was second in the 200 free in 1:58.53.

Also in the 200 free, Chandler claimed 17th place in 2:00.19 and on July 31 took fifth in the 800 free in 8:40.68.

On Aug. 4, the final day of the meet, Vollmer swam a 25.60 to take seventh place in the 50 free, one spot ahead of former teammate Jessica Hardy, who was eighth in 25.62 for the Trojan Swim Club.

Hardy, the American record holder in the 200-meter breaststroke, also took sixth in the 200 breaststroke in 1:08.74 on Aug. 3 and tied for 20th in the 100 free in 56.52.

Earlier in the summer, Vollmer also starred at the Janet Evans Invitational, a Grand Prix event held July 12-15 in Los Angeles. Vollmer won the 100 free (55.50), with senior Cal teammate Emily Silver taking third (55.72) and Hardy placing fifth (56.42), and the 100 fly (58.40) with now former teammates Erin Reilly (1:00.30) and Leann Toomey (1:02.97), respectively, placing fourth and eighth.

Reilly claimed her own title in Los Angeles, edging runner-up Vollmer in the 200 free, 1:59.89 to 1:59.95. Chandler was third (2:00.55) and Silver was sixth (2:02.34). Hardy won the 50 free (25.39), with Silver fourth (25.89) and Vollmer sixth (26.03).

Former Bears star Natalie Coughlin won the 400 free in 4:10.99 and Chandler was second in 4:11.97.

In the Santa Clara International Invitational, held June 28-July 1 in the South Bay, Coughlin won two events - the 100 free (54.12) and 100 fly (58.45). Silver (55.70) was second and Vollmer (55.77) was third in the 100 free, while Vollmer (58.50) finished right behind Coughlin and Reilly (1:01.47) was eighth in the 100 fly.

The California Aquatics foursome of Silver, Coughlin, Reilly and Vollmer also won the 4x100 free relay in a meet-record 3:43.50. The California Aquatics 4x200 free relay of Vollmer, Silver, Chandler and Reilly was second (8:08.07) and the club's 4x100 medley relay of former Bear Sherry Tsai, sophomore Alexandra Ellis, Vollmer and Reilly finished fourth (4:14.84).
