MENIFEE, Calif. - After winning its last two tournaments, the 16th-ranked California women's golf team is in fifth place Monday with a score of 607 through 36 holes of the Pioneer Electronics Bruin Classic. The Golden Bears carded a 302 in the opening round and concluded play Monday with a 305.
Cal will need a stellar final round Tuesday to make up 15 strokes on first-place Pepperdine (592). Host UCLA is second (596) and Oklahoma is third (598) at the 16-team tournament at Menifee Lakes Country Club.
California is coming off victories at the Spartan Invitational, March 7-9, and at its own Bay Area Classic, Feb. 25-26.
Katherine Hull of Pepperdine, the defending Pioneer Classic champion, is tied with her teammate Lindsey Wright for the lead with a 143. Two strokes back is UCLA's Alicia Um (145), who is competing as an individual.
Sophomore Anna Temple, who is participating as an individual, led the Bears after 36 holes with a 150 and is tied for 15th. Senior Anne Walker and junior Vikki Laing are Cal's top scoring golfers, tying for 18th at 151.
The final round of the tournament begins tomorrow with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
