MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - California swimmer Henrique Barbosa broke his own school record to finish third in the 100-yard breaststroke preliminary on Day 2 of the NCAA Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center on Friday. Today the top-ranked Golden Bears qualified six individual swimmers and one relay for tonight's finals. Another Cal relay, the 800 freestyle relay, is also qualified for the final, though there was no prelim for the race.

Barbosa, a junior who competed at the 2004 Athens Olympics for his native Brazil, swam a time of 53.54 in the 100 breaststroke to surpass the old Cal record of 53.59 he swam last year. Senior teammate Caleb Rowe qualified for the consolation final with a ninth-place finish (54.01). Stanford's Garry Marshall won the 100 breaststroke prelim (53.03).

The Bears added two more entrants to the finals with a pair of second-place finishes. The Cal quartet of junior Milorad Cavic, Barbosa, freshman Jernej Godec and senior Duje Draganja finished second in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:25.97. Stanford won the event with a time of 1:25.51. Draganja was also second in the 100 butterfly in a time of 46.23. Cavic, who was 11th, reached the consolation final with a time of 47.16. Stanford's Jayme Cramer won the 100 fly prelim in a pool record (46.20).

In the 200 freestyle, Swiss Bear Dominik Meichtry finished 10th in 1:35.56 to reach the consolation final. Arizona's Simon Burnett won the race in a pool record (1:33.75).

Senior John Dorr swam Cal's top time of the season in the 400 individual medley to finish 14th (3:50.07) in the prelim and qualify for the consolation final tonight. Auburn's Eric Shanteau won the prelim (3:44.88).

Cal senior diver Louie Gagnet finished ninth on the three-meter springboard, with 547.50 points, but did not qualify for the final.

No Bears qualified for the final of the 100 backstroke, though Cavic finished 19th (48.19) and Godec was 25th (48.87) in the prelim.
