BERKELEY - California wide receiver DeSean Jackson was selected as a semifinalist for the Fred Biletnikoff Award as one of the nation's most outstanding receivers. The sophomore was not on the award's preseason Watch List, but his outstanding performance this season, while leading the Golden Bears to the top of the Pac-10, has launched him into the pool of 13 semifinalists.
Jackson currently has 36 catches for 622 yards this season for the Golden Bears, who are ranked No. 10 in the nation. The team's leading receiver, Jackson, is also second on the team and in the Pac-10 in scoring with 10 touchdowns, including eight receiving and two on punt returns.
The announcement of the winners of the Biletnikoff Award will be made during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show that will be broadcast on ESPN on Thursday December 7, 2006.
To be considered for the Biletnikoff Award an individual must display leadership and self-discipline; have a significant, positive impact on his team's success and display a commitment to be the best player he can be.
Voters for the Biletnikoff Award include selected members of the national media and former receivers. The winner will be announced at a banquet at the Florida State University Center on Feb. 9, 2007.
Jackson joins running back Marshawn Lynch, cornerback Daymeion Hughes and head coach Jeff Tedford as Golden Bears who have been named semifinalists for national awards.
