(ERIN, WI) - Four players affiliated with the Cal men's golf team began action Monday at the 111th U.S. Amateur Championship being played Aug. 22-28. Current men's golfer Michael Weaver is tied for 21st place and was the top finisher among the foursome with an opening-round two-under par 68 at the par-70, 6,622-yard Blue Mound Golf and Country Club.
Weaver is three shots off the five-under par pace of tri-leaders Blake Biddle, Gregor Mann and John Hahn halfway through the event's two rounds of stroke play that conclude on Tuesday, with the top 64 advancing to match play beginning Wednesday. "The magic number here is 64," Desimone said. "That's what you're shooting for. You don't worry about any of the other numbers."
"Michael played very well just as he has played all summer," Desimone added. "He's got a little bit of space but with as many good players as there are in this event there is no let up. You have to keep going."
Weaver's current teammates Max Homa and Nick Thomas are also playing in the event. Homa was the only one of the four Cal affiliates to play Monday at the par-72 Erin Hills course that at 7,760 yards is the longest in USGA history, shooting a three-over par 75 that has him tied for 167th place.
"Max has some work to do Tuesday, but he's almost always been a slow starter," Desimone said. "He needs to gear it up tomorrow."
Thomas tied for 254th after a six-over par 76 at Blue Mound.
"This was Nick's first taster major national amateur golf," Desimone said. "All in all, I think he's holding up pretty well."
Former Bear Ben is tied for 199th after a four-over par 76, also at Blue Mound. An was the 2009 U.S. Amateur champion and a semifinalist at the 2010 event, while Homa was a quarterfinalist in 2010 before falling to An.
"We're rooting for all of these guys," Desimone said.
The second and final round of stroke play will take place on Tuesday beginning at 7:00 a.m. CT. Homa will be the first Cal affiliate off the tee at 7:10 a.m. CT at Blue Mound. Weaver (8:50 a.m. CT), An (12:35 p.m. CT) and Thomas (12:35 p.m. CT) will all play Erin Hills.
