WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -
California women's tennis freshman Marina Cossou was named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for March 3-9, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Cossou took the top singles court for the Golden Bears for the first time this week and produced three victories, each over ranked opponents without dropping a single set. In her first ever match on court one, Cossou defeated No. 11-ranked Megan Moulton-Levy of William & Mary by a 6-2, 6-1 score. Facing visiting conference foes over the weekend, Cossou once again turned away the top opposing player, defeating No. 30 Nadia Abdala of Arizona State 6-3, 6-2 on March 7 and No. 62 Danielle Steinberg of Arizona 6-4, 6-1 on March 8. The win over Abdala gave Cossou the 20th singles win of her young career and her victory against Steinberg tied her for top marks amongst Golden Bears for singles wins with 21.
In doubles play, Cossou went 2-1, earning an 8-4 victory with partner junior Claire Ilcinkas against William & Mary. Paired with fellow freshman Rachael Dillon, Cossou split matches but helped her team get an impressive 8-1 win over Arizona's Orletsky and Toporowska. The victories pushed Cossou's doubles totals to 8-4 in dual play and 16-8 overall.
Cal is currently No. 8 in the ITA poll and will receive a welcome bye in dual play this week before hosting BYU Friday, March 21 in a 1:30 p.m. match at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
This is the first Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week award for Cossou and the sixth for the California women's tennis team. The last Cal player to garner the award was senior Stephanie Kusano for the week of Feb. 18-24.
