No. 6/7 Cal Improves to 19-2

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - No. 6/7 California picked up three wins on the final day of the rainy National Invitational Softball Tournament, improving to 19-2 on the season. The Golden Bears started Sunday morning by finishing a rain-postponed game from Saturday night against Colorado State. Cal won 4-2. The Bears then turned in a 9-0 win over Southern Illinois and a 10-2 decision against North Dakota State at Twin Creeks Sports Complex.

Cal 4, Colorado State 2
The game started at 9 p.m. on Saturday evening, with the Bears going ahead 1-0 in the first inning after senior Haley Woods drove in senior Lindsay James on an RBI single. Colorado State tied it up in the fifth on a solo home run from Brittany Huerta. The game was called due to rain shortly thereafter - at 10:30 p.m. - and resumed Sunday morning at 10 a.m.

In the continuation of the game, the Bears scored three runs in the sixth to take the final 4-1 lead. Freshman Morgan Siegel led off the inning with a single. Woods reached base on a walk, with Jessica Moore replacing her as a pinch runner. Freshman Carly Winger drove in Siegel on an RBI single. Senior Emily Friedman drove in Moore on a sacrifice fly. Winger scored the game's final run on an RBI single from junior Alex Sutton.

Freshman Lauren Frankiewicz improved to 7-0 this season, striking out seven and giving up four hits.

Cal 9, Southern Illinois 0
Just 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Colorado State game Sunday, Cal took on Southern Illinois, winning 9-0. The Bears, who tallied 13 hits in the win, scored two runs in the first, one in the third and three in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

Friedman led the Bears offensively, going 4-for-4 with four RBI, while senior Kristina Thorson struck out seven in five innings, improving to 11-2.

Freshman Gina Leomiti doubled and James singled to lead off the fourth inning. Siegel drove in both runners on a single. Siegel scored on a single from Friedman.

In the fifth inning, Woods drove in sophomore Julie Meyer on a sacrifice to center. Sophomore Chloe Kloezeman then drove in Leomiti on an RBI single. Siegel scored on an RBI single from Friedman.

Cal 10, North Dakota State 1

With the Bears leading 2-1 entering the sixth inning, Cal broke the game open, scoring eight runs. The Bears had taken an early 2-0 lead in the first. North Dakota State (2-14) put its only run on the board in the fourth.

Thorson (12-2) picked up her second win of the day, entering the game in relief of Frankiewicz in the fourth. Sutton led the Bears' offensive attack, finishing 3-for-4 with one run and three RBI.

Siegel and James led off the sixth with back-to-back singles. Woods reached base on an error. Siegel scored on a single by Winger. Friedman drove in James on a single. Sutton knocked a single into center, scoring Winger and Rachel Wilson, who was pinch-running for Woods. Freshman Heather Camara drove in two more runs on a single. Camara later scored on an RBI from James. Junior Jeana Gevas rounded out scoring on an RBI single from Leomiti.

In the first, James and Woods hit back-to-back singles. Friedman drove in James on an RBI single. Woods scored on a single from Sutton.
