STOCKTON, CALIF. - No. 3-ranked California was paced by senior Ivan Rackov's four goals as the Golden Bears secured an 8-6 victory over No. 6 Pacific Saturday (Sept. 24) in a non-conference match at Chris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton. Cal improved to 6-1 season and will be playing the Tigers (4-3) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in Berkeley on Nov. 11.
Rackov, the 2010 National Player of the Year, now has 29 goals in seven matches - first in the MPSF with 4.1 goals per game. He scored the Bears' first two goals as Cal jumped out to a 2-1 advantage after the first period. Rackov then sealed the contest with two of Cal's four goals in the fourth period. Senior Luka Saponjic and sophomore Giacomo Cupido also scored goals for the Bears in the fourth period. Saponjic added five assists to lead Cal.
"This was a tough defensive game," said Bear coach Kirk Everist. "I felt we executed our game plan pretty well today and we were able to make a few plays offensively in the fourth period when we needed to."
Cal will next travel to UC Davis Sunday to compete in two matches of the Aggie Shootout at the Schaal Aquatics Center. The Bears will face Fresno Pacific at 11:30 a.m. and No. 15 Santa Clara at 3 p.m. Cal will then battle the top teams in the nation the following week, Oct. 1-2, at the SoCal Invitational.
