BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Sophomore guard Alexis Gray-Lawson scored 22 points, grabbed six rebounds and handed out three assists to lead No. 21 California past Saint Mary's 71-56 Sunday.
The Bears, who entered the game with a preseason ranking for the first time, took 37 free throws to just 13 for Saint Mary's and converted 29 Gael turnovers into 27 points.
The Gaels (0-1) were playing their first game for coach Paul Thomas, who was hired over the summer. Saint Mary's led through much of the early part of the game, with Cal hitting just four of its first 16.
Down 21-18 with 7:58 left in the first half, Cal went on a 20-3 run, sparked by eight points from Greif, to go up, 38-24.
St. Mary's began chipping away at the Bears' lead early in the second half. But with the Gaels within seven at 43-36, Cal had another 12-2 run and remained ahead by double digits the rest of the afternoon.
Cal saw limited play from preseason all-American Devenai Hampton, who logged just eight minutes due to knee problems. She finished with three points and three rebounds.
